Description:

Audra is a tall and striking human female possessed of a cold and somehow sinister beauty. Her shoulder-length hair is glossy and blue-black, her eyes are ice-blue and unwavering. She has very fair skin and long, exceedingly graceful hands.

Background:

As a child, Audra was distant and cool even towards family. She lacked friends, and was serious and studious from an early age. Her father was a battle chiurgeon and her mother was one of the town midwives, so Audra grew up with an interest in medicine.

That interest took a darker turn when she began purposefully injuring animals to see if she could fix them. When animals no longer provided the answers she was looking for, she moved on to experimenting on people. Her activities caused concern among the locals, but no one ever suspected the solemn, quiet Audra.

She became an accomplished physician, and an especially adept surgeon thanks to her nimble hands. When her teachers discovered she was also a mage, she studied the healing magics and from there quite naturally (in her view) went into spells of body control.

Her skills first gained her a small practice, then an appointment as the personal physician to a local lord. However, because of her lack of any sort of bedside manner and the distressing tendency of patients to die under her care, she found it difficult to keep a job and started drawing the attention of the law.

She opted to change her name and appearance (the latter by magic), and seek employers with the ability to appreciate her, and the rumor that she used her magic to change her appearance.

Audra has never been married and the thought of a family has never crossed her mind. She is quite content in her work and doesn’t want her life complicated by messy emotions.

Personality:

Audra views all other people as potential test subjects. She enjoys challenging herself by seeing how much she can put a subject through before death ends her experiments. She delights in devising new tortures and mutilations, using her spells and surgical skills for a variety of horrific effects.

She does not concern herself with social activities or fashion, preferring to dress in stark outfits of black and white and spending her leisure time studying or dissecting. The only exception to this is her fondness for chess, which she picked up during her school years.

Although she seems a natural candidate to go into necromancy, Audra has completely disdained that school of magic. She pays no attention to any religions (not athiestic, she’s just never bothered to think about it) and does not believe in any sort of an afterlife. She claims to have seen death countless times and never witnessed the passage of a soul, dismisses all talk of spirits as nonsense, and thinks that raising Undead is a waste of good cadavers.

Equipment:

Blackwood staff carved with a topaz-eyed snake’s head, enchanted with the Staff spell for use via Wizard’s Touch. Audra encourages the rumor that her staff can turn into a live snake, though this is a lie; it’s her own Shapeshift spell that spawned the rumors.

Snake Form:

  • ST 20
  • DX 13
  • IQ 13
  • HT 20
DR 3 Speed 4 Size: 4 hexes
Weight: 135 lbs.
Scales: black with blue markings
Attack: grapple for 1d6-1 crushing
Possible Encounters:
  1. Audra would be well-suited as second in command to an evil overlord or mage, working as an inquisitor and healer. If the plot calls for the classic elaborately slow death for the hero, her dungeon full of devices would be the ideal setting.
  2. Impatient with being ordered around, Audra has opened her own hospital. Perhaps a PC or friend of the party requires intense medical care ...
